Well it's nearly that time of year again - the UK Indy 40k Grand Tournament. The whole reason why just over a year ago I started blogging to get my Space Wolves finished.
This year I was planning to use Blood Angels but time and money is against me but this is what I wanted to use:
HQ:
Librarian = 100
Troops:
Assault Squad, no jump packs, power weapon, melta gun = 125
Dedicated Land Raider Redeemer (-35), Searchlight, extra armour, multi melta = 231

5 Scouts, Camo Cloaks = 90
Fast attack:
Baal Predator, Assault Cannon, Heavy Bolters, Searchlight = 146

Heavy Support:
Predator, Autocannon, Lascannons, Searchlight = 136
Predator, Autocannon, Lascannons, Searchlight = 136
Predator, Autocannon, Lascannons, Searchlight = 136
Total: 1748
I have all these models but I just haven't enough time to build the Land Raiders, magnetise them, and then paint the lot. I have the predators build and fully magnetised with all options.
So alas I have gone back to old reliable - my Space Wolves, but they have changed since my last post about them. I have squeezed much more out of the points and considering what's hot at the moment (Necrons and Grey Knights), and boosted how I like to play them - a sort of aggressive counter attack.
HQ:
Rune Priest, Jaws, Tempests Wrath = 100
Elites:
5 Wolf guard, 3x Power fist + combi meltas, 2x Combi meltas = 175
5 Wolf Scouts, melta gun =85

8 Grey Hunters, Wolf Banner, Melta Gun = 135
Rhino =35

Rhino =35
5 Grey Hunters, Flamer = 75

Heavy Support:
6 Long Fangs, 5 Missile Launchers = 140
Razorback, Lascannon, Twin Linked Plasma Guns = 75

Razorback, Lascannon, Twin Linked Plasma Guns = 75

Razorback, Lascannon, Twin Linked Plasma Guns = 75
Total: 1750
Basically I have dumped Mark of The Wulfen (which saddens me), and the Land Speeders to get a second 5 man Grey Hunter squad and upgrade the Bolter-back to las/plas and bring in two more las/plas razorbacks which belong to the Long fangs for Dawn of War purposes but will get hijacked by the 2 5 man squads. Also as Space Wolves we get free searchlights and acute senses which are going to be vital vs Necrons.
I have been really enjoyed using Tempest's Wrath on my Rune Priest I think its highly underrated and I think that's due to people still thinking about using shooting powers such as Jaws, Living lightning and Murderous Hurricane, but with Grey Knights, Necrons and Dark Eldar on the scene now I think Tempests Wrath is going to be really useful. In fact I think that's a blog post for another day!
Interesting: I've started to use TW myself just now and I find it very useful. Normally DE are a pain in the hole with their crazy mobility boosting the threat ranges of their Lances & Blasters but I have a game a few days ago where they were suffering at least 1 Immobilised result a turn due to TW so that the Venoms & Ravagers were sitting ducks by turn 3.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that Alex Harrison used it at Caledonian in his list and have had lads in my own group suggesting I use it for quite some time already so I figured I'd run with it and I've been impressed so far but I really want to see what it does to Necron Barge Lords that will risk sweeping.
As for the rest of the list I would strongly advise you get some Fists in the Wolf Scouts so that they can reliably tag 2 tanks a turn by multi-charging or win combats against relatively tough units by swinging combat by one or two points with the Fist. Not to mention there is the opportunity to Instant Kill characters. In saying that, I've fallen out of love with Scouts in the past few months.
Well people forget that with the Wolf Guard you can still divvy them up how you like so if I think I might need fists in the Scouts e.g. Vs IG tanks then I will.
DeleteI think a lot of Wolf players have gotten into a bad habit of writing their lists with the Wolf guard already in their units rather than keeping them separate - they start to miss seeing the flexibility that being able to put hem where they like.
For example if I'm desperate to kill a Land raider full of 'pain' I could put the 2 naked combi melta guys in a transport and shove it down their mouth.
As for Tempests Wrath the first time I used it competitively it was vs double Seer Council Jetbike Eldar and I tabled him in 40mins! I remember when that army was really scary!

DeleteI was at a 1k tourney recently and was doing the old mix'n'match myself in order to have 2 GH squads in the centre with Fist & Double Melta present a viable threat leaving the Scouts free to roam - characters would go back to deal with them *because* they didn't have a Fist but that left my Troops to take on units that were down 4-6 Power Weapon attacks (usually at a higher Initiative value too) and a Ld buff.
If I were to recommend any serious changes I would suggest losing a solitary GH in a squad and buying 3 Dozer Blades for your Rhinos - I never leave home without them now because I can use them aggressively early on and then throw them into terrain to get a cover save later in the game without the fear of Immobilising myself and potentially cutting off an avenue of escape (or objective grabbing) for my midfield units. They're worth their weight in gold.
Lovin the list, I really like the wolf list! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThank you, good luck in Birmingham!
